Truck crash on Interstate 81 leaves two dead

On Behalf of | Oct 10, 2019 | Truck Accidents |

An accident on Interstate 81 involving a large truck left two people dead. One of the victims was a Blacksburg resident.

Virginia State Police, who investigated the Roanoke County truck accident, charged the trucker involved in the accident with reckless driving. However, they chose not to arrest the driver but instead to issue a summons for him to appear in court at a later date.

The accident involved four vehicles altogether. According to reports, the driver of the truck apparently did not slow down when vehicles in front of him started to stop due to traffic congestion. As a result, the trucker plowed into an SUV and a luxury sedan, as well as another large truck. The trucker eventually stopped his vehicle on the freeway’s median.

Both the driver of the SUV and the sedan died after rescuers transported them to nearby hospitals. Neither the driver who rear-ended the vehicles nor the driver of the other truck suffered any injuries. While police have already cited the truck driver for his role in this accident, the investigation will continue.

This sad story is yet another example showing how important it is for truck drivers to pay careful attention while traveling. They must stay alert and awake, as traffic on an interstate can back up with little or no warning. Even a split second of inattentiveness can lead to a deadly accident like the one in this case.

After all, because of the difference in size between a car and truck, what might have otherwise been a fender-bender can prove to be disastrous.

While more information will no doubt be forthcoming, the families of these victims will eventually need to carefully evaluate their legal options, as they will likely need compensation to cover their bills and lost income.
