What are the most common holiday crimes?

On Behalf of | Dec 8, 2021 | Criminal Defense |

The holidays cause a lot of stress, especially when it comes to finances. Some people may have a hard time dealing with this time of year.

There are certain crimes that may more often occur around the holidays. A criminal accusation can happen to anyone, so FindLaw suggests understanding common holiday crimes and how to avoid them.

Vandalism

Some people go overboard when it comes to decorating for the holidays. The hundreds of twinkling lights may look pretty, but they can be a real pain for the neighborhood. If you have an obnoxious display near your home that is causing you distress, avoid the temptation to handle removal yourself. Check for legal options to fix the issue, such as HOA rules that require lights to be off during certain hours.

Domestic violence

Domestic violence incidents may rise around the holiday due to the stress of the season. If you have anger issues or you know you get too stressed out by the holidays, seek help before things turn dark.

DUI

Drunk driving peaks during the holidays. The parties and get-togethers encourage drinking, but getting behind the wheel intoxicated is a bad idea. Make sure to plan transportation options ahead of time so you will not end up driving after drinking too much.

Shoplifting

It may seem easy to slip something into your pocket and walk out of a store, but it is not worth it. You do not want to spend the holidays in jail. If you cannot afford to buy gifts for everyone on your list, then prioritize a few people and give the rest a nice card or bake them some cookies.
